Dafydd Iwan not to retire - official!

Veteran folk singer, politician and businessman Dafydd Iwan announced to more than 3,000 people in the Eisteddfod Pavilion he will not be retiring from public performances.

Dafydd announced his retirement from singing engagements at the Llanelli Eisteddfod seven years ago and there was a grand farewell concert.

Since then there have been several more final performances - and equally as many come back appearances.

But during the concert in the Pavilion tonight he said he would be appearing again, and again with a performance in Cwm Sychnant lined up later this month.

Dafydd was joined on stage by folk group Ar Log for the concert to celebrate 25 years since they toured Wales to commemorate 600 years of the death of Llywelyn ein Llyw Olaf.

The hair may be greyer but the years rolled back as Dafydd and various musicians sang their way through his song book. We were even "treated" to a special rendition of Cwm Rhyd y Rhosyn - a ditty he penned especially for children. Its annoyingly catchy and I'm still humming it now!

Dafydd was also joined by rockers Tara Bethan and Mike Peters. Both were wildly applauded by the crowd. But the biggest cheers were reserved for compere Ray Garvell. His voice had been heard from the start but when he appeared the audience rose together and applauded his bravery.

The climax of the two hour show was the whole ensemble leading the audience in the big Dafydd Iwan/Ar Log anthems - Cerddwn Ymlaen and Yma o Hyd. Followed by Dafydd's call to arms I'r Gad the audience went home happy.

Note: This was written last night but because I'd left the mobile phone in the car I could'nt send it down the line. I spared Eisteddfodwyr the sight of me in my pajamas looking for the vehicle.
